Spelling Words!
Good Evening! Tomorrow (Wednesday) I will not be in school. I'll be back on Thursday. Please remember to turn in permission slips for the field trip to the Lowry Park Zoo. Here are this week's Spelling Words for 5th and 6th Grade:
shrug
tundra
dollar

Ohio
throb
locate
umpire
Josiah
throne
poetry
hungry
Reuben
accuse
usually
problem
confuse
parachute
amused
profit
Bonus: astride, anointed, courtier, musicians, royalty
Our words this week deal with the Long and Short sounds of both /o/ and /u/. Using /o/ at the beginning of the word takes on the can have the long or short sound such as in Ohio (long) and octopus (short). Short /o/ also uses the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) pattern as in words like hot, top, bottom, etc. Long /o/ is made in double vowel combinations such as in poetry or boat or woe and in the CVCe (consonant-vowel-consonant-silent e) pattern of words like throne or lonely. The short u sound is made by words using the CVC pattern like the words cut or number. The long u sound is made by words using the CVCe pattern and when /u/ is in combination with another vowel such as in words like fuse, rude, or in words like hue, or glue. Exceptions would include Reuben or usually.
Homework tonight:
Define each spelling word.
Complete English classwork.

TGIF! There was ITBS Testing all this week and we will complete all testing by this coming Monday, September 23, 2013. Students have been working really hard and giving their best efforts. Thank you for helping us by helping your students to get lots of rest and good food daily. Thank you also for getting your students to school on time. I want to encourage you to continue to encourage your students in school.
IMPORTANT:
We have been having an issue with name calling and teasing as well as doing things to aggravate one another just to get a reaction out of them. That kind of behavior is bullying, and, according to the school handbook, is worthy of suspension. Please talk to your children about how mean words hurt and cannot be taken back after they come out of their mouths. We should also strive to treat others the way we would like to be treated or the way God treats us most of all. God shows forgiveness and kindness to us even when we are least deserving of it and we should strive to be like Him in every way. Let us love one another in word and deed.
Our first Robotics class was this Thursday and we had an excellent turn out. Students were so enthusiastic about what they were doing that they didn't want to stop at 6:00 p.m.! We took on a couple of challenges and built our robots from scratch. With a few hiccups along the way, students quickly discovered that they had to improvise and keep pushing even when things were not working out the way they had planned or hoped and others found that they have a lot to offer the Robotics team. We can't wait to see you at next week's meeting if you are on the team!
Don't forget our first field trip on Monday, September 30 to the Lowry Park Zoo. The cost is $14 and permission slips are due on the morning of the 30th. If any of you are interested in being a chaperone, please let me know at mcja5and6@gmail.com, or send a text message to my cell found on the very first post of our blog.
Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Sabbath!

Congratulations!
Hi to everyone! There is some good news to share: After 5 weeks of school 5th and 6th Grade has earned their...
That's right you've guessed it: Pizza Party! Students had to exhibit good behavior in chapel, around campus and in the classroom in order to earn scoops of popcorn. Although it has been slow going (talkers and jesters beware...), students were able to fill their two pint jars with popcorn and will have their pizza party this Friday, September 13, 2013. If you would like to send in items to help us celebrate please send enough for 16 people. I have a few suggestions: baby carrots and ranch, apple slices and other fruits or veggies, chips with or without dip, or whatever else you think would be a healthy and fun food. Please do not send in cupcakes or candy for your sakes ;-)
Homework:
Remember your Spelling Word Work: Sentences with each Spelling Word.
Posters for the 5 Ways to Prevent the Flu:
Wash those hands, Kill those Germs!
Cover your cough, Hide your Sneeze!
If you're sick and don't feel well, please, stay at home!
Avoid those who are sick...Nicely!
Get A Flu Shot!
Return your completed maps for Social Studies.
Important News:
ITBS (IOWA Test of Basic Skills) Testing is coming up and will begin this MONDAY, September 16, 2013. We will begin promptly after worship so parents please help us to help your child do well by doing the following:
Get your child(ren) to bed early so that they will be rested for the testing.
Feed them a good breakfast or get them to school early for a good breakfast.
Avoid giving sugar-laden foods and candy as these will not aid in keeping children alert (not to mention healthy).
Encourage your student(s) to give their best effort and to come to you with any concerns they may have about the test.
Pray with your students and give them lots of hugs and support.
Have a good evening!

Happy New Week Everyone! I hope you enjoyed your LOOOOOOOOONG weekend and got some well-deserved rest. This is week four of our first quarter and we are truly in full swing. I have received about 9 students' funds for the Art Class. I appreciate your cooperation so far and I am giving everyone until this Wednesday's Art Class to bring in the remaining monies. Please remind your parents about the money and don't forget to bring your sketch diaries or sketch pads by Wednesday if you do not have them as yet. NOTE: IF (and only IF) you have old magazines (especially cooking and home decor magazines) I am asking that you bring those in by Wednesday in order for us to start our new Art project this week. We will be learning about Line (the first element of Art) especially implied line. We will be creating mosaics about some aspect of life, so go ahead and start thinking about some object or image you would like to create that has to do with life in some way or another. Your object can come from nature (eg. fish, birds, rabbits), from home ( a bowl of fruit, a baby), or from your imagination (no Anime or video games) but it must be something that pertains to life.
Spelling words (5th and 6th) this week will deal with words that have the Long or Short /i/ sounds in them. The letter /i/ short sound says /i/ as in wig, mitten or igloo. Words with the Long /i/ sound are generally followed by silent /e/ and follows the CVCe (Consonant Vowel Consonant Silent /e/) pattern or /i/ is followed by another vowel as in pie, or giant. Words with short /i/ follow the CVC pattern (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant). The exceptions in this week's words would be consider, and Bible names such as Gideon and Simeon.
