Congratulations to Rigaud Chostel on a job well done at this year's School Wide Spelling Bee! He will be going on to Regional Spelling Bee in Miami next month to compete against the champions of all the other schools in the Southeastern Conference. Blessings and Success Rigaud! I would also like to add that I am very proud of all the contestants who participated and did their very best. Keep practicing and studying for next year for the chance at 'bee'ing next year's Spelling Champ!
Here are this week's Spelling Words:
5th and 6th Grades are continuing their study of the controlled /r/ sound using the letter combinations of /or/ and /ir/. The /or/ sound is produced by the letter combinations of /or/ as in forward, and record, and /ore/ as in shore or pore. The /ir/ sound is produced by letter combinations of /eer/ as in deer or peer but also by /ear/ as in fear, or spear.

7th and 8th Grade's words are our last set of Latin Roots: viv, vit=live, life; spir=breathe; public, pop=people; pater=father; mater=mother. Remember to learn the roots to help you figure out the word parts. Separate the words by affixes such as the prefixes (at the beginning of the word), and suffixes (at the end of a word). Look at whether the word is a plural, past or present tense. Break your words into smaller parts to make it easier for you to learn them so that you can put them back together and spell them correctly. Attack word parts rather than words as a whole and the "elephant" is much easier to eat.

Science Report and Spelling Bee
Good Evening Parents!
Our current chapter in Science deals with mammals and how animals are ordered in their respective classes. Each student has chosen a mammal class (category) to research. The classes were chosen at random and each student is to provide a 5 minute oral report about his or her class.
For example, the mammal class Carnivora is the group of animals that contains lions, tigers and bears (Oh my!). Students will answer the following questions in each presentation: Which animals belong to the animal class I've chosen? What are the characteristics that put these animals in this classification ( diet, type of feet/hands/teeth, migratory/hibernating, method of reproduction--live birth or egg, etc)? Where is this animal located (globally, in a specific country or in isolation, in a particular type of land--plains or mountains, in water, etc)? How many species are contained in this mammal classification? Students may create a PowerPoint presentation (no more than 7 or 8 slides) or a poster. Neither presentation will count more or less than the other as long as the questions are sufficiently answered in the presentation and the student shows a clear knowledge of the information researched.
In other news, the School wide Spelling bee is tomorrow Wednesday, January 29, 2014, during Chapel hour. Tomorrow's champion will prepare to compete in Miami for the Regional (Conference Wide ) Spelling Bee. Blessings and success to all participants!
